Why Use Primers and Sealers

Any good painter & decorator will Know why and when to use a primer or sealer, but for the novice house painter this can be something of a mystery that can lead to poor results when they finish their paint project.

By using primer and sealer they can improve the appearance, performance and life span of the finished paint project.

Primers are generally pigmented while sealers are often not pigmented.

What are the benefits of using a Primer or Sealer?

o Adhesion, they help the paint stick better to the surface being painted, by making the surface more uniform and accepting of the paint to be applied and allowing it to get a better grip.

o Uniformity, On porous and surfaces uneven in porosity, they make the sheen more uniform and attractive.

o Stain blocking, Some Primers prevent stains such as nicotine, resin or water stains bleeding through the surface.

o Protection, Can protect the finished coats on Masonry surfaces from alkalinity and efflorescence.

When to use a Primer or Sealer.

o When painting previously unpainted surfaces like bare timber new plasterboard (dry wall),

o Uneven or badly deteriorated surfaces.

o When painting a stripped surface.

o Problem surfaces like melamine.

Check with the manufacturers instructions of your finish paint to see what primer they recommend you use for their product and the surface you intend to use it on.

You can also ask your paint stockist what they recommend depending on where you buy from as this sometimes can be a hit or miss affair.

Why Contract Painting and Decorating Specialists for Remodeling?

Many people get inspired to start a DIY remodelling project. But nobody can accomplish a task like experts do. Sometimes the only reason why individuals undertake such projects themselves is because they want to save money. But if what you want is convenience, great results and to save time- you definitely require the aid of specialists. Depending on the type of project you decide to undertake, hiring experts may actually save you time and possibly money. If you hire professionals, they guarantee customer satisfaction, so if something does go wrong they will fix it with no additional costs.

Specialised Equipment and Tools

Experienced decorators are tradesmen with access to some of the most sophisticated equipment, machinery and tools required to complete projects in a timely manner, without compromising quality and value. As an individual, your access to such resources is often limited. If you want, you could rent tools for home decorating and painting, but that means spending more than what you could afford, not to mention spending time in familiarising with the handling of such tools. As with most cases, the quality of tools is secondary to the level of expertise.

Unparalleled Expertise in the Field

There's no one more experienced and more skilled in the art of painting and decorating than someone who is in the industry for quite some time, who has done a good number of projects with satisfactory results. If you are into DIY with very basic skills and very basic tools, you couldn't expect to achieve promising outcomes. Whilst there are tools that make DIY painting a lot simpler, but these tools often limit the way you decorate, as in the case of stencils. Plus, there's always an edge to a well-applied coat of paint, something only experts can do.

Guarantee, Insurance and License

If you undertake a DIY remodelling project, it is important to consider possible mistakes and waste expenses. On the contrary, painting contractors carry guarantee and insurance to assure you of the quality of their service. Most, if not all, decorating tradesmen offer you some form of guarantee in case you aren't satisfied with their work. Contract violation on their part may entitle you to have an option not to pay them, instead they would pay you.

Well-Rounded Services, Continuity

Contractors not only paint and decorate your house, but they also do a bunch of other inter-related tasks such as: provide you with painting and decorating tips, clean up and do preparatory work. These professionals are trained to do their job without causing much distraction or interruption to you, especially in cases when you continue to use other areas of the building during the remodelling project. And as you would expect, undertaking a DIY remodelling project requires you to set aside any other activities to make time for planning, preparing and then finally painting and decorating. If you have a lot of time on your hands and can afford making mistakes, then you can attempt such projects, otherwise it is always smart to put such responsibilities in the hands of expert painters and decorators.

What Do Painters and Decorators Do?

When your home or business decorations become old, unattractive or outdated it is time to start looking into painting and decorating companies. These companies perform different duties. Decorators have the task of setting the tone for a job and helping the property owner choose styles and colours. Painters are hired to bring the colours chosen to life on the property's walls.

Painters and decorators may have different duties, but the end result comes from well-coordinated planning between the two. It is your job to make the right choice for the job. But, before you can even begin to hire you should have a clear understanding of what each company does for you.

What does a decorator actually do for you?
A decorator helps you choose the right furniture and materials for your needs. For example, if you have pets or children, you may want certain colours and materials that are compatible with their propensity to make messes and stain furniture. Or if your office will need to appear "high-class" for your clientele, a decorator will be able to help you select furniture that will appeal to sophisticated aesthetics.

A decorator will also be able to help you develop a working budget for the job by taking into account things like the size of the space to be decorated, and the details you want for your site (lighting, paint, furniture styles.) They can even advise you on staff to hire for the job.

What do contractors do?
Some painting contractors so simple jobs such as priming walls and painting one basic colour on the wall, chosen by you and your decorator. Others are may paint murals or do feux painting jobs. Some painting companies advertise a variety of specialties for indoor and outdoor painting. Your decorator should be able to help you narrow the selection down to a few contractors, but the final decision is yours.

Once the painter is onsite, you need to make sure that the colours chosen are the right ones for you. Perhaps you can ask them to paint a small area and allow it to dry so you can look at it in various types of lighting. Once you are satisfied, they should complete the work in a relatively short amount of time. You can ask the contractor for a time estimate before they begin to work so you and your decorator can plan for other aspects of the decoration job.

Hire your painters and decorators with the same eye to detail that you expect them to use for the job. The process may take a while, but the results will make the effort worthwhile.

There Are Variables That Can Affect How Long Your Paint Lasts

There are several variables that will all affect exactly how long your exterior house paint will last and each variable needs to be taken into consideration. The variables are; surface preparation, how good a quality the paint is and the extremes of weather in your local area. Most types of paint are due to last around 15 years; however this time is only achieved if you buy good quality paint.

The surface your Oxford painter will apply the paint to will need to prepared before any painting is done. New surfaces should be primed; priming the wood seals it and bonds the surface of the top coat of paint to the wood. A surface that isn't primed can allow paint moisture into the wood and cause the wood to rot inside.

If the surface your Oxford painter and decorator is applying paint to has once had or still does have a previous paint on then it's essential it does not have any cracks on or peeling paint. Your Oxford painter should use a wire brush and scraper; this will remove any peeling paint. The Oxford painter and decorator should then sand the surface to make it smooth as to give the best paint texture.

The quality of paint will also determine how long the paint will last; better quality paints contain more bonding materials than lower quality and cheaper paints. A good quality tin of pain will cost in the region of £15-20, make sure your Oxford Painter sources good quality paint for your painting job, if not it could mean you have to repaint your home sooner than you should.

Paint should not be applied above 32'C, in Oxford that is not likely to be a problem but it is best not have your Oxford decorator paint your home on a very hot summers day. This is because hot temperatures cause paint to dry much quicker than it would in a mild temperature; the bonding materials are not as effective and do not bond to the surface like they should. Paint that doesn't bond will weaken quicker.

On the other scale it's advised that your Oxford painter does not paint your home when the temperature is below 16'C. There are special paints that allow the paint to be applied at 10'C so make sure if it's the winter your Oxford decorator uses this special kind of paint. When the temperature is low the moisture in the air increases, reapplying a second coat too shortly will mean the first coat has not formed which can result in the paint weakening.
